Some people don't like to have their own names on a membership list or a badge, for a variety of reasons. We are happy for you to use a distinctive other name for these purposes.

The key word is "distinctive". A common Christian name on its own will not do, even if it's the way you want to be addressed at the convention. There are two reasons for our needing people to have badge names that are unique to one individual. One is that on the membership list, it doesn't help anyone to see that someone called "Joe" has joined, because that might not be their friend Joe but some completely other Joe they don't get on with. The other is that the badge itself serves to identify individuals to the security staff as members of the convention, and if you lose it somewhere they're better able to recognise that the random stranger wearing Joe Bloggs' badge isn't that person than they are to realise that he's not "Joe".
